Celebrating the Compassion of Christ
Mark 6:30-44
Thesis: We celebrate that fact that our God always takes care of us! He always has our best interest in mind!
- “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." (vs 31b)
- Jesus recognized that the disciples had been tirelessly teaching, preaching and healing people. (vs 31a)
- God knows how hard we have been working.
- Jesus invited them to spend time with him.
“Jesus said, Come with me”
- Jesus chose to just meet with the disciples alone, “By yourselves”.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:20)
- Jesus has planned a spiritual retreat for his disciples so they could rest.
- God gave us one out of seven days to rest.
“For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.” (Exodus 20:11)
- To Keep our bodies and minds strong we must rest.
- However, upon arriving at their retreat location they were met by a needy crowd of people.
- “When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them,” (34a)
- Jesus recognized that this large number of people needed Him more than he needed rest.
“because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.” (vs34b)
- Compassion will compel you to help those whom you love.
- The disciples recognized the crowd had physical hunger needs and had compassion on them. (see vs 35-36)
- The disciples were developing the heart of Christ for others.
- As we become more like Christ we will become less concerned about self and more concerned for others.
- Jesus once again challenges the disciples to engage in ministry.
“But he (Jesus) answered, ‘You give them something to eat.”
III. “Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.” (vs39)
- Jesus continues to provide direction to the disciples on how to serve.
- “Have them sit in groups” is God’s plan for humanity.
- God created us to be in community. That is why he created Eve for Adam. That is why he created the family. That is why he created the Church.
- That is why “social distancing” has been hard.
- However, God says, “There is a time for everything, and a season for activity under heaven…a time to embrace and a time to refrain.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 &5b)
- Jesus directs them to “Sit on the green grass.”
“He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters”, (Psalms 23:2)
- Jesus then prays and then feeds them until they are full.
- Everyone was physical, mentally, emotionally, socially and spiritually fed and renewed, including the disciples.
“They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.” (Mathew 14:20)

Working Alongside of God
Text: Mark 6:6b-13
Thesis: It is a privilege to be “Working Alongside of God”! May each one of us embrace it and run with it. It is God’s divine plan for our lives.
I. Jesus modeled ministry prior to sending the disciples out. (vs6b)
“Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.” (vs6b)
- In Mark’s gospel, chapters 1-6:6a, Jesus has been doing all ministry himself.
- Jesus modeled mentoring.
- The Apostle Paul was Timothy’s mentor.
- The disciples only observed during this period of Jesus’s ministry.
- From this point on Jesus would begin to include His disciples in building the Kingdom.
- Every believer should be mentoring someone for the Kingdom’s sake.
- There is a personal satisfaction in helping someone develop into all that God intended them to be.
II. Jesus sent the disciples out. (vs7)
- “Jesus called the twelve to him.”
- No one was exempt from doing ministry.
- Jesus gives his disciples and all of those who follow the
“Great commission”.
“He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15)
- “Jesus sent them out two by two.”
- We learn a principle from scripture that there is strength in numbers. Two people can accomplish way more than one.
God reveals through Solomon: “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
III. Jesus provides for the disciples through the families they ministered to. (vss8-10)
- “God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, (Psalms 50:10)” and they may be in your bank account. God, in reality, owns all things.
- We may think what we own is ours, but according to the big scheme of things as revealed in scripture, God does!
- God has the power to take our lives and divide up what we have and give it to others. It is the same for Sinner and Saint.
- Jesus explains this principle in Luke 12: 13-21.
- Jesus instructed them not to take provisions with them but reside in the homes of those who were open to the gospel. (vss8-10)
- We are never to demand, take, or steal, but receive with thanksgiving, as a worker that has justly earned, because doing the work of God is of great value!

Jesus Rejected in His Hometown
Mark 6:1-6a
Thesis: If you see God as small and insignificant your faith will be small, your courage will be weak, and your hope will be absent!
- The initial reaction of the people to Jesus is amazement!
“Many who heard were amazed.”
- Jesus took His disciples (His ministry Team) with Him to His hometown.
- This signified his intent was about ministry and not just a social visit.
- Jesus was concerned about those close to him understanding He was to be their savior as well.
- We are called by God to share Jesus with our family members and close acquaintances.
Our Mission…
“To Know Christ, share His love and make Him known to others!”
- “When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.” (vs2a)
- However, their initial reaction of amazement turned to criticism. (vs2c-3)
- We learn from Luke’s Gospel that Jesus chose a prophetic passage concerning the coming Messiah and said He was the fulfillment of this prophecy. (Read Luke 4:17-21)
- Jesus made the declaration in front of the entire congregation that he was the long-awaited Messiah.
- It is still vital today that people recognize Jesus as divine, God in the flesh, and the Savior of the world.
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1&14)
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
- The people reacted by questioning and criticizing his social structure. (Read vs 2c-3)
- Many could not accept His Divine nature but only saw him as just one of the local boys.
- Many may fail to recognize God’s calling on your life and only see you as the rebellious youth you may have been.
So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one."(1Samual 16:11-12)
III. Jesus recognized that they were offended when He proclaimed, He was the one Isaiah prophesied about. (3c-6c)
“And they took offense at him” (3c)
- “Jesus said to them, ‘Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” (vs4)
- Their failure to recognize Jesus as God resulted in many people not being able to be healed.
- Jesus is always “amazed” at the lack of faith in people.

The Reality of Our Immortality
Text: Matthew 28: 1-10
Thesis: God moves Heaven and earth to provide us with Immortality.
- The Resurrection from a human standpoint was unexpected.
- The Ladies went to the tomb to prepare the lifeless body of Jesus. (Expec- tations were low, reality is they were clueless to the resurrection.)
- The ladies were possibly experiencing post-traumatic shock after witness- ing the most horrifying brutal execution of their Savior and friend.
- Jesus had told them prior to his death that the resurrection would take place but it was beyond human comprehension.
- The Resurrection was literally and emotionally earth shaking.
- Scripture states that a “violent earthquake” literally happened.
- We also learn “an Angel of the Lord came down from heaven.”
- God’s power was so magnificent that it caused the elite, highly trained Roman soldiers to “shake like dead men”.
“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:10-11)
- In the midst of this cataclysmic event God’s compassion is witnessed as the Angel calms the fears of his faithful few.
III. The Resurrection was God’s Spiritual re-alignment of heaven and earth.
- The tomb was rendered powerless.
- The earthly body was transformed into a heavenly body. (see 1Cor. 15:42-55)
- Every person is mortal until they come to know Jesus Christ.
- “You are a mortal because you are mortal. This means that you are an individual destined to die because you are suscepti- ble to death.” (Unknown)
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; (John 11:25)
- The King of Kings and Lord of Lords “rose a victor from the dark do- main”.
“Jesus has risen, Just as He said.” (vs6)
- God’s salvation master plan was complete.
- Mankind’s final enemy was destroyed.
* “The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”(1 Cor. 15:26)
* “I want to know Christ--yes, to know the power of his resurrection and par-ticipation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,” (Phil. 3:10)

Praising God in the Midst of Suffering
Text: Luke 19:28-40
Thesis: Praising God during suffering is a Testimony of our Faith in Jesus Christ and to the Power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us!
- Praising God during suffering is our testimony of our Faith in Jesus Christ. (vs28-34)
- Jesus’ choice of animal to ride was intentional.
“It was a deliberate claim to be king, a deliberate fulfilling of the picture in Zechariah 9:9. But even in this Jesus underlined the kind of Kingship which he claimed. The ass in Palestine was not a lowly beast that it is this country. It was noble. Only in war did kings ride horses; when they came in peace they come upon an ass. So Jesus by his actions came as a king of love and peace, and not as the conquering military hero whom the mob expected and waited.” (William Barclay, Luke, page 240.)
- Jesus was totally in control and knowledgeable of all things, even in the locating of the colt.
“Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.” (vs32)
- Our God is Omniscient!
“I find it a great comfort and encouragement knowing that God knows all things and loves me!” Pastor Chuck
- Jesus was willingly on his way to Golgotha! (see John 10:14-18)
- Jesus’ many disciples gave expression of their Faith in Jesus Christ as their King.
“They brought it (the colt) to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.” (vs35-36)
- Praising God during suffering is our testimony of the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
- The followers of Jesus were experiencing the moving of the Holy Spirit when they “began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen…” (v37b)
- Jesus had healed many and delivered many from demons! They knew suffering and because of Jesus they now have hope!
- “Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” (vs39)
- Not everyone will approve of you praising God.
- Jesus defends those who are praising Him!
“I tell you” ‘he replied’ “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (Vs40)
- When we praise God, He is Glorified, and we are strengthened.
- Since God inhabits our praises there is something supernatural that takes place within us.
- God’s Spirit will empower us to have the courage to praise Him in difficult times.
“For God did not give us a Spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)
- Jesus by the words of his disciples knew that God had revealed to them that he was the Messiah.
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (vs 38)
- Jesus earlier explained that Peter’s recognition of him, as the Messiah, was from God. (See Mathew 16:13-17)
“Jesus replied, ‘Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my father in heaven.
