Keep the Faith!!!
Mark 9:14-32
Thesis: Faith in God is critical to experiencing a victorious Christian life!
- Keep the Faith in the good times…Praise His Name!
- Just as the disciples experienced a “Mountain Top Experience”, so do we as Christians.
- God has blessed us with “God Moments”, birth of children, loving spouses, the love of family, with houses and lands, monetary and material blessings, etc.
- We need to count our blessings and “Praise His Name”!
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:21)
- Beware, it is often in the good times that people forget about God.
“When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.” (Deuteronomy 8:10-15)
- Keep the Faith in the bad times…Seek His Face! (vs 14-19)
- After Jesus and the disciples experience the amazing time with God on the mountain, they encountered three great challenges.
- A large crowd and the teachers of the law in a religious dispute.
“When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.”
- A father explains to Jesus his son’s Spiritual/mental/physical condition and his disciple’s failures. (vs 17-18)
- A father’s lack of Faith in Jesus.
“But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
- As Christians there will be great challenges in our lives, but we are not alone.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33
- Do not share with the unsaved person that if they become a Christian, they will not have challenges. Possibly they may have more
- "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” (Matthew 10:16)
- The advantage of being a Christian is that we have Christ to help us in a time of need.
- In challenges we can turn to God in prayer, who hears and answers our prayers.
- Never Forget!!! “Prayer is the Key to Power”
"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)
- Faith is the Victory…so “Keep the Faith”! (vs 20-29)
- The father of the child humbled himself before Jesus and “exclaimed, I do believe”. He then admitted his lack of faith by asking Jesus “help me overcome my unbelief!”
- Every person must declare Jesus as Lord to find salvation.
“If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)
2. If our faith is weak, we must confess and ask Jesus to increase our Faith!
- Jesus in response to the father’s faith healed the demon possessed boy! (Read vs23-29)
- In response to the disciple’s question on why they could not heal the people, Jesus underscores the power of prayer. (vs28-29)

A Mountain Top Experience
(A God Moment)
Mark 9:1-8
Thesis: “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
- “After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone…” (vs2a)
- Jesus reveals that our God desires to meet with us on a personal level.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)
‘For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
- “There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.” (Vs2b-3)
- Jesus allowed Peter, James, and John to experience the Glory of God.
- Every Christian should cherish the special encounters they may have with God.
- They are often referred to as “God Moments” or “Mountain Top Experiences” of “Spiritual Breakthroughs”!
- They often come during times of worship, while praying or while reading his Word.
- The three disciples witnessed the restoring of Jesus’ glory that he had with the Father.
- John describes Jesus’ post-resurrected/glorified state. (Read Revelations 1:9-19)
III. “And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.” (vs4)
- Moses and Elijah were used by God mightily in the Old Testament regarding Salvation history.
- Moses had been transfigured at Mount Sinai while receiving the Ten Commandments. (Read Exodus 34:29-35)
- Elijah had been transfigured in the “Chariot of Fire” experience when he went to be with God. (Read II Kings 2 11-12)
- ‘Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."(vs5)
- The Disciples experienced “A God Moment”!
- There is nothing like an overwhelming “God Moment”
Peter declared, “It is good for us to be here.”
- You often do not want to leave.
Peter declared, “Let us put up three shelters…”
- That is why the Word of God invites you to seek God!
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)
- The disciples were “frightened”. (Read Daniel 10: 1-12)
- Then a cloud appeared and overshadowed them. A voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, whom I love. Keep on listening to him!"(vs7)
- The Disciples witnessed “God the Father” giving a personal confirmation to “God the Son”.
- God is faithful and will give us spiritual confirmation as we sincerely seek Him.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

Revive Us Again!
Text: Mark 8:31-38; Luke 21:34-36
Thesis: God’s Word is calling “Believers” to have a greater Commitment to the cause of Christ and the building of the Kingdom of God!
- Jesus is instructing the “crowd along with his disciples” what it means to be a true disciple. (vs 34 &38)
- Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must…”
1st “Deny himself”
- This is one of the hardest things known to human kind.
2nd “Take up his cross”
- Note that Jesus states it is our cross.
- The cross symbolizes difficulty, suffering and even shame (not popular).
Jesus’ thoughts about the Cross. “Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” (Matthew 26:38-39)
3rd “Follow me (Jesus)”
- You cannot be both a follower of the world and Jesus.
- “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.” (1John 2:15)
- "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Matthew 6:24)
- Jesus states an additional requirement to be a true disciple.
“If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." (vs 38)
- We are called to be proud of knowing Jesus and that we follow His Word in an “adulterous and sinful generation”.
- Anything we sacrifice for God will be replaced with something greater.
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” James Elliot
- Jesus reveals the value of the human soul as a reason to be totally committed to him and His Word. (vs 35-37)
- Jesus seeks to elevate the value of the soul to “the crowd along with his disciples.”
- Jesus reveals that the soul is more valuable than physical life and all of its rewards.
“What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul” (vs 36)
- A guiding Biblical Principle I learned years ago and try to live my life by is “This world is not all there is, the best is yet to come.”

The Comfort of Christ
Text: John 14:1-4
Thesis: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33
- We can find comfort and peace when we have trouble.
“ ...In this world you will have trouble…(John 16:33)”
- Following Jesus does not mean that life is always easy.
- “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace… But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33).”
- “Faith in the absolute goodness of God can alone sustain the mind in these deep places of fear, and under the shadow of death (Eerdmans Pulpit Commentary).”
- Jesus is ready to navigate our troubles with us.
“Jesus wept (John 11:35).”
- Jesus can sympathize with our troubles
- “...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set be fore him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2).”
- ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name (John 12:27-28)!”
- Jesus does not give us false hope when he provides comfort.
- Jesus provides comfort and care in all things, and as we draw near to him he draws near to us.
III. Jesus will come again!
“Christ is in fact from the moment of his Resurrection ever coming to the world and to the Church and to men as the Risen Lord (B.G. Westcott).”
Ephesians 3:16-19
2 Corinthians 5:18-19
- We can have his abiding presence in our hearts, and when we leave this place, we can abide in his presence for all eternity.
- “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body(Philippians 1:21-24).”
- “Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confi- dent, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8).”
- We have an honorable call to share our knowledge of Christ with this world,
- The road to Christ is a road of Love and obedience.
- “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another (John 13:34).”
- “If you love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15, NKJV).”

Jesus's Predictions and Peter's Concerns - August 9
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Pastor Chuck Ryan
Jesus’s Predictions and Peter’s Concerns
Text: Mark 8:31-33
Thesis: It does not always feel good, to do what is right!
- Jesus predicts his own death. (vs31)
- Jesus uses the phrase that was given to Daniels foretelling Jesus’ coming; “the Son of Man” (Daniel 7: 13-14)
- Jesus spoke plainly about the events that were related to his Crucifixion and Resurrection.
- Jesus was emphatic about these events taking place by mentioning he “must suffer many things and be rejected and “he must be killed and after three days rise again.”
- The salvation of our lives and Souls were dependent upon Jesus death and resurrection.
“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrew 9:22) (See Hebrews 9:11-22)
“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.” (1Cor. 15:20-21)
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;” (John11:25)
- If Peter and the disciple would have succeeded in convincing Jesus to abandon his plan, they would have brought death on themselves and all humanity to follow.
- Peter expressed his and the other disciples’ concerns. (vs 32-33)
“…and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.” (Vs32)
- Peter was concerned about Jesus’ well-being.
- We are called by God to have a heart of love for others.
“Love thy neighbor as thyself.”
2/. Peter’s heart was in the right place, but he lacked understanding to the plans of God.
- “But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns." (vs 33)
- Peter’s concerns for Jesus were not in-line with the Salvation Plan of God.
- “Peter (and the disciples) views are locked into the common militaristic expectation of the ‘Davidic Messiah.” (BBC, Mark. Page 232)
- Jesus encountered this incorrect view in the feeding of the Five Thousand as recorded in the book of John.
“After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.” (John 6:14-15)
- Some theologians theorize that Judas Iscariot, who was a zealot, held to this common view which may have prompted him into selling Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
- Jesus out of great love for his disciples rebuked Peter sternly.
- Jesus taught a Biblical Principle here that could be summed up as: “It does not always feel good, to do what is right!”
