Christ was Born--Right on Time!
Text: Luke 2:1-7
Thesis: “God Is Never Late; He's Seldom Early; He’s Always Right on Time” Stan Toler
- “The Time Came” (vs6a)
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die,” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2)
- It was time for Immanuel- “God is with us” to be born.
* Isaiah prophesied 700 BC- “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
*The Angel spoke to Joseph- "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us"). (Matthew 1:23)
“God Is Never Late; He's Seldom Early; He’s Always Right on Time”
- “She (Mary) placed him (Jesus) in a manger.” (Vs7)
The conditions from a human standpoint were less han desirable.
- Mary and Joseph were living in the city of Nazareth, 80 miles to the north of Bethlehem. (“As a crow flies”) Today the paved road is 96 miles.
- It is most likely, Mary being nine months pregnant, rode on the back of a donkey or walked all the way to Bethlehem.
- They were commanded by the Roman government to go at this time to Bethlehem to register for the purpose of paying their taxes.
- Mary and Joseph found Bethlehem crowded with people to the point that there were no vacancies available.
- Mary gave birth to Jesus in a cave/barn like dwelling. (There were no hospitals or birthing centers.)
- However, the conditions from God’s standpoint were perfect!
- Jesus was born in the place and conditions that the prophets foretold.
Micah prophesied in 700BC, "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." (Micah 5:2)
- Jesus was intentionally given a humble birth. (Read 1 Corinthians 1:20-31)
“Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
- Jesus was not born in a palace but a stable so that he could understand struggles and heartache of the ordinary person like you and me. (Read about our High Priest in Hebrews 4:14-16)
III. God’s Timing and Plans are Always Perfect..
- Put your trust in the Author and Perfector of our Faith, Jesus Christ!
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

The Prophets’ Light of Hope
Text: Isaiah 9: 2-7; (vs2)
Thesis: Jesus came to bring us light. Jesus can satisfy the salvation longings of every person’s heart, from the time of Adam until this very day.
- Many people expected and longed for the coming of Christ Jesus. (vs2)
- Immediately after “the Fall of mankind” God promised Adam and Eve the coming of a Savior.
“So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, "Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3: 14-15)
- In 700BC, Isaiah, one of the greatest prophets, prophesied about the coming of Christ Jesus, “The Light of Hope.”
- Many alive at the time of Christ’s birth longed for the birth of the messiah.
- The Shepherds were the first to hear of the birth of Jesus and came from the fields to see the Christ.
“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:11)
- The shepherds represented the common man.
Jesus states a Biblical principle, "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." (Mathew 20:16)
- The elderly man Simeon saw Jesus at the time Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple.
“For mine eyes have seen thy salvation Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” (Luke 2:30-32)
- Simeon recognized Jesus as “The Light of hope” that Isaiah prophesied about.
- The elderly was used by God to proclaim the birth of Christ.
- The Prophetess Anna witnessed Jesus and gave Biblical proclamation.
“Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:38)a. The female gender was recognized and confirmed by God as a valid Spiritual messenger.
- The wise men from the east came and worshipped Jesus.
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." (Mathew 2:1&2)
- God chose those whom the religious elite would not accept.
- Jesus is “The Light of Hope” for all people who live in darkness today.
- Many today, as in the past need the Hope that Jesus brings.
- Seek “The Light of Hope”-Jesus
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Rev.3:12)
- Remain close to “The Light of Hope”-Jesus
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:7-8)

Sermon Outline:
- Advent is a time to Remember.
- On the second Sunday of Advent we intentionally remember the anticipation of Peace.
- The Tree of Jesse is a metaphor:
- The Tree of Jesse is first and foremost a metaphor for the Lineage of Jesus.
- The Tree of Jesse also represents the Kingdom of Judah.
- Christianity is the religion of the meek.
- Remembering your humble beginning helps you to realign your identity with Christ in the present, because…
- . . . for Judah, this hope of a new sprout out of the Stump of Jesse was everything to them.
- Our self-sufficiency has the potential to get in the way of our full trust in the Messiah.
- The Kingdom of Judah had a general lack of peace.
- What we cannot fix, God can.

Thanksgiving Day
Deuteronomy 8: 1-14(vs.10)
Thesis: Families need to come together and thank God as a family for the country He has blessed us with. God Bless America!
- There are a lot of similarities between God leading Israel to Canaan and the pilgrims to America.
- God’s Word states, “Remember how the Lord led you…”
- God calls them to reflect upon their own history.
- The Israelites were delivered from the religious oppression of Egypt and the Pilgrims from the religious oppression of England.
- The Israelites were led across the desert and the American’s were led across the Atlantic Ocean.
- Both the Israelites and the Pilgrims were concerned about religious freedoms, a place to raise their families and place where they could prosper.
- As God was concerned about the Israelites not forgetting Him while enjoying the blessings, so God is concerned about America not forgetting him as well.
- “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.” (vs 10)
- These are the instructions that God gave Israel and to all His children He has blessed.
- We, as Americans, the descendants of the first Pilgrims have been blessed with a great land of prosperity.
- We are called to praise him!!!
- “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.” (vs11) (also Read vss. 18-20)
- Forgetfulness can lead to pride. (vs12-16)
- All good things come from God. (vs17-18)
