Waiting On My Portion
Text: Lamentations 3:19-26
Thesis: “I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”
- Lamentations 3:24
We are all keenly aware of our difficulties.
“I remember my affliction… I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me
(Lamentations 3:19-20).”
“Hear us, our God, for we are despised…(Nehemiah 4:4)”
God sees us in our times of trouble and need.
“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble
(Psalm 9:9).”
We have hope in the compassion of our Lord.
“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not
consumed, for his compassions never fail (Lamentations 3:21-22).”
A. When people have let us down, we can trust in the unfailing love of God.
“Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled (Joshua 21:45).”
B. As God Comforts us, we can comfort others.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God
(1 Corinthians 1:3-4).”
III. We must learn to wait on the Lord.
“it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord (Lamentations 3:26).”
A. The Lord doesn’t always work on our timeline.
See Psalm 13.
B. We may not live long enough to see the end results of God working through our troubles.
You can be proactive in waiting.
See Psalm 37.
Trust in the Lord and do good (Verse 3)
Take Delight in the Lord (Verse 4)
Be still before the Lord (Verse 7)
Refrain from anger (Verse 8)
Hope in the Lord (Verse 34)
A. As we wait on our portion, in all things, confide and seek out The Lord.
“The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him… (Lamentations 3:25)

Godly Wisdom - February 14, 2021

- Solomon was well known for 2 specific things: his building accomplishments and his wisdom.
- Solomon wrote down what we now know as the Book of Proverbs because he knew how easy it is to forsake wisdom.
- Israel had previously decided to worship an idol in the form of a Golden Calf instead of being wise and worshipping the one true God.
READING OF SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: Proverbs 2:1-8.
- Jesus is the embodiment of the “father” that is described in Proverbs 2.
- Jesus taught the disciples like a father would teach his son.
- Jesus’s teaching comes from a place of father-like care.
- Jesus is also the embodiment of the “son” that is described in Proverbs 2.
- Like a son listening to his father’s instruction, Jesus prays to God in order to receive God’s instruction.
- Jesus receives God’s instruction in order that Jesus could heed God’s instruction.
- Furthermore Jesus is the embodiment of wisdom.
- Jesus understood the inherent need of God.
- God helps us to achieve wisdom through his grace.
- We serve a God who wants to see success rather than failure.

The New and Perfect
Text: Mark 11:15-19
Thesis: Jesus came and replaced the old sacrificial system with Himself.
- The temple was the main place of worship. (vs15-17)
- What Jesus saw upon entering the temple caused him to have great moral indignation.
- Jesus began physically to destroy the corrupt activities in the temple.
- There were three violations of the temple that Jesus encountered.
- Jesus objected to the buying and selling because it was being held in the court of the Gentiles.
“The place where the money changers (15) and those who sold doves plied their trade was called the Mountain of the House or the Court of the Gentiles. It was a spacious courtyard surrounding the Temple proper and open to the Gentiles as well as to Jews.” (BBC, page 367, A.E. Sanner)
- Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right.” (Acts 10:34-35)
- Jesus opposed that the temple had become the central treasury practicing corrupt methods and influenced by powerful corrupt leaders such as Herod the Great.
- What started off as a compassionate ministry by providing animals without spot or blemish for weary travelers that came to Jerusalem to worship, became a financial racketeering event.
- The temple was no longer a place of prayer. (Read vs 17)
- It was not a place where one could find peace for their soul by communing with God.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (James 4:8)
- The clearing of the temple by Jesus would culminate in the crucifixion of Jesus.
(vs 18-19)
- Jesus began a process that he would complete in His death and resurrection.
- Jesus, so to speak, “pulled the trigger” on God’s salvation plan in this radical event. (Read vs 18a)
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17)
- Those who sought to kill Jesus had no idea that the temple would be destroyed, and Jesus would replace the old sacrificial system.
- Jesus began the destruction of the old system on that day. The blood of animals would no longer be used for the forgiveness of sin. Jesus would become the “Sacrificial Lamb” who brings salvation to the world.
“but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. (Jesus shed His blood on the cross) The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” (Hebrews 9:12-14)
- The physical Temple in Jerusalem was completed in AD 63 but was completely destroyed in AD 70.
“As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings! “Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down." (Mark 13:1-2)
- Never put your hope in things that are seen!
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (1 Cor. 4:18)

Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory
Text: James 1: 1-4
Thesis: We can experience “pure joy” in our trials if the Glory of God is on us!
- “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you experience trials of many kinds”, because it will ensure that we do not become stagnant in our Spiritual growth.
- The expectation level is enormous from a human standpoint. It would be more than enough to expect us to be joyful in troubles but “Pure” joy? “Consider it pure joy” (2a)
- This type of expectation can only be met by the power of God.
Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
- Stephen experienced pure joy at his execution because the glory of God was upon him.
“He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God…Lord do not hold this sin against them.” (Read Acts 7:54-60)
- James’ wording makes it clear that as Christians we will have trials in this life. It is inevitable!
“My brothers, whenever,”
Jesus said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
- Trials will keep us alive in Christ! If we are not growing, we are dying and will become stagnant in our Faith.
- Jesus wants us to experience the Living Water and not become stagnant water.
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." (John 4:13-14)
- James has in mind the type of “trials” (2b) that an Athlete might experience to make them stronger.
- The purpose of trials is not to defeat us but to make us stronger.
“Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (vs3)
- The big questions are, do we truly know this, and does it matter?
- Jesus “for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- Jesus is our perfect example!
Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[a] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.” (Luke 23:34)

I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made - January 24, 2021

“I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made”
Text: Psalms 139:13-16
Thesis: God is our maker, and He does all things perfectly!
- Everyone is fearfully and wonderfully made.
- That includes the unborn to the oldest person, the well and the sick, the mentally healthy and the mentally challenged, the physically whole and the physically challenged, both male and female, and every ethnicity and color.
- God loves the unborn baby!
- God had knowledge of us in his mind prior to our being formed in our mother’s womb.
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (Jeremiah 1:5)
- We did not exist elsewhere prior to be being born.
- God’s Word refers to the unborn as persons by using personal pronouns and not in language as to describe an object or fetal tissue. Note the use of “I” and “My”.
- God created everyone in His image.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
- Both male and female are made in God’s image. Both encompass the attributes of God.
- God is referred to in scripture using the male gender description as “father”, but is described as nurturing and tender as used to describe a mother.
“Jesus said, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” (Mathew 23:37)
- God only created one race of people that is “Adam’s race”.
- There are multiple ethnicities from this one race that have developed over time.
Definition: “It is the state of belonging to a subgroup of the population, sharing similar physical or social attributes.
- Everyone is from the same family because we all are from the same parents, Adam, and Eve. God calls us to love like family.
- God knows and loves the oldest of people.
The Psalmist states, “All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (vs6b)
- God’s Omniscience knew me prior to birth and the day I will die and everything in between.
- God never granted anyone the right to end the life of the innocent.
“Do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty,” (Exodus 23:7)
- Everyone has great value and a great purpose in life.
