The Rocks Will Cry Out
Text: Luke 19:28-40
Thesis: “Let everything with breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.” (Psalms 150:6)
- This story speaks of preparation and planning. (28-36)
- Everything Jesus did was intentional, the fulfilment of what God pre-ordained.
Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. (Luke 19:32)
- Jesus was following the plan designed by the Triune Godhead from the beginning of time.
- The day, the place of his announcement and even his mode of transportation was prearranged.
- The prophet Zachariah in 520BC prophesied of Jesus’ triumphal entry.
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. (Zachariah 9:9)
- Jesus’s first coming was prophesied, and His second coming is prophesied as well.
- Many in the Jewish community could not accept Jesus as the messiah because they misinterpreted prophesy.
- The common Jewish person recognized Jesus as the Messiah and praised Him, but the Religious leaders did not. (vs 36-38)
“The crowd spread their cloaks on the road…and the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in the heavens and glory in the highest!”
- When going to town people usually wear their best.
- The people laid their worldly possessions at the feet of Jesus.
- The people were not ashamed of Jesus, but where bold, because
“They sang with loud voices.”
- They not only were being observed by their peers but those in authority over them.
Jesus said, “If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." (Mark 8:38)
- The Pharisee had three reasons for rebuking the crowd for praising Jesus.
1st- They did not believe Jesus to be the Messiah, so they felt the crowd was blaspheming God.
2nd-They feared the Roman authorities.
You do not realize that it is better for you that one man dies for the people than that the whole nation perishes." (John 11:50)
3rd They were jealous of Jesus.
For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. (Mark 15:10 NASB) (The NIV states “Self-interest”)
- Jesus makes it clear that it is impossible to stop the praise of God.
“I tell you, he replied, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” (vs. 40)
- Jesus in defending His disciple’s actions of praise, revealed a Spiritual Truth, an Eternal Truth, and a Divine Law.
The Holy Trinity will be praised!
The Psalmist states, “Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord.” (Psalms 150)

1 Thessalonians 5:12-24
- Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians was a letter of encouragement and challenge.
- The Thessalonians weren’t doing anything wrong. In fact, they were people of great faith.
- God’s grace empowers the believer to lean into the sanctified life.
- The business of life can cause present day believers to have a good enough mentality when it comes to faith, but God’s grace empowers us to move past that.
- According to James 3, the words that we say can indicate the intent of our hearts.
- A Sanctified heart produces fruitful words, while a wicked heart is overtaken by the tongue.

The Great Commission
Matthew 28:16-20
Thesis: Jesus gave us the Call to “Go”; the “Authority” to carry it out and the promise to stay with us always. Jesus commissioned us to be his disciples!
- The Call! (vs16-17)
- Jesus called His disciples to follow Him and commanded them to meet on the mountain.
“Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go.”
“Trust and Obey for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to Trust and Obey.” (chorus)
- The disciples responded to Jesus original call to be a disciple and “take up their cross and follow Him.”
Definition of a Disciple: “To be a ‘born-again’ (John 3:16) believer who is growing and becoming like Christ. When maturity has taken place, the disciple, is able to play a role in making disciples of others.” Pastor Chuck
The Apostle Paul States: “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” (1 Cor. 3:6)
- Most of the disciples demonstrated Jesus was their Lord and as well as their Savior by worshiping Jesus, “but some doubted.” (vs17)
- The Commission! (18-20a)
“Jesus said, ‘All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go…” 18-19a)
- Jesus gave the Christian the right to preach and teach the “Good News” of God.
- Jesus has the ultimate authority to commission the believer.
“that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,” (Philippians 2:10)
- Jesus commands his disciple to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (19a)
- Jesus’ authority supersedes all earthly authority.
- Just prior to Jesus’ ascension He gave more specific instructions to the disciple on where they are to go.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
- “Jerusalem” to the disciples meant their local communities.
- Begin in your hometown making disciples.
- “Samaria” represented the people groups they despised.
- Who do you have prejudice against?
- “Ends of the Earth” meant world missions.
III. The Challenge! (19-20)
- We are to make disciples of them by “Going, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”
- The Disciple will need the Holy Spirit to empower them to carry out this enormous command.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you
- The place God calls you to “Go”, the people may not want you there!
“Go where they don’t want you and stay until they can’t do without you.” Dr. Charles Strickland
- Jesus recognized the “challenges” His disciple would face and promised, “And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.”

God’s Higher Purpose
Text: Genesis 50:15-21; Isaiah 61
Thesis: It is easy to be transfixed on all the challenges and fail to see God’s Higher purpose! May we through the eye of Faith see God’s unlimited power at work in our lives.
- The death of Jacob, the father of Joseph, triggered an enormous fear in Joseph’s brothers. (vs15-17a)
- The brothers believed now that their father was dead that Joseph would seek revenge on them for all the harm, they caused him.
- The brothers possibly fabricated a story claiming their father reached out to Joseph pleading their defense.
- “When their message came to him, Joseph wept.” (17b)
- Joseph had the heart of Christ when it came to understanding the sin of his brothers and at the same time his love was so great, he was compelled to forgive.
- Joseph was instrumental in bringing physical salvation to the known world, including his family.
- Jesus was instrumental in bringing spiritual salvation to the world.
“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts2:21)
- Joseph was not revengeful.
- Joseph said, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? (vs 19a)
- The Apostle Paul teaches, “Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.”
(Romans 12:19)
III. Joseph explains the higher purpose of God to his brothers. (20-21)
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
- God can bring beauty out of Ashes.
“To bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes.” (Read Isaiah 61:1-3)
Application:
1st Many like Joseph, in this past year, have experienced great hardship and anxiety.
Jesus explains, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
2nd As Joseph explained, God has a higher purpose planned for his children and the world.
- What Satan intends for evil, God can use for the good.
- Jesus’ death on the cross provided eternal life “for everyone who calls on His name.”
- Nero’s persecution of Christians caused them to flee Jerusalem and go to the utter parts of the earth and spread the Gospel.
- God can use difficulties to drive Christians out of their comfort zone so they will seek him and His will.
3rd God calls us through the eye of Faith to believe He can bring “beauty out of Ashes.
“And we know that all things work together for the good to those who love God and to those called according to God’s will.” (Romans 8:28)
Examples: 1) An increase in the opportunity to pray-for healing, for the Church, for the salvation of others, for our nation etc. 2) Ministry opportunities-cards, letters, phone calls. 3) Ministry expansion.
Isaiah 55:11
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

The Alabaster Box
Text: Mark 14:1-11
Thesis: A true love for God and our Neighbor is Extravagant because God’s love is extravagant. “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son…” John 3:16
- Money can be a “stumbling block” for some believers, preventing them from doing ministry because it cost too much. (vs1-5)
- “They growled or glowered or scolded her.” (A.E. Sanner, BBC, Mark, page 388)
- This lady’s love for Jesus was expressed in an extravagant manner.
“a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume…, she broke it and poured the perfume on Jesus head…, it could have been sold for more than a year’s wages. (vss.3b&5a)
- This was possibly her life’s savings!
- Jesus defended her actions in eight statement, not just one. (vs 6-9)
- “Leave her alone”
- God defends those doing his will.
“I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.” (Isaiah 49:25)
- “Why are you bothering her?”
- Be careful not to discourage someone doing an act of kindness in Jesus’ name.
- “She has done a beautiful thing to me.”
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. (Philippians 4:8)
- “The poor you will always have with you and you can help them anytime you want.”
- “If you are looking for an excuse, any will do.” Unknown
- “But you will not always have me.”
- Do not take for granted the spiritual liberties that we have today.
Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.” Luke 21:33-34)
- “She did what she could.”
- God recognizes all our efforts and contributions when given from the heart.
“And Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and began watching how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large amounts. And a poor widow came and put in two lepta coins, which amount to a quadrans. Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury; for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.” (Mark 12:41-44)
- “She poured perfume on my body before hand to prepare me for burial.”
- The lady’s actions revealed she recognized Jesus as the Messiah.
- “I tell you the truth, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her.”
- We are fulfilling Jesus word’s as we retell this story.
III. Then Judas left and went to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.
- Judas’ actions surrounding money was a radical contrast to the loving lady who broke the alabaster jar of expensive perfume!
