“This is a Profound Mystery” Text: Ephesians 5:22-33 Thesis: God, the architect and designer of marriages has called both the husband and wife to live by the highest of principles. I. The “Institution of Marriage” is God’s creation and design. A. In verse 31 the Apostle Paul quotes from Genesis 2:24 when he states, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will be one flesh.” 1. For marriages to be functional they must operate on the principles and mandates taught in God’s Word. 2. Many marriages today are dysfunctional because they have left God and His principles out of the relationship. a. Even those who are born-again, who have failed to practice God’s principles, have experienced failed marriages. b. Since marriage is God’s creation and design, as Christians, we should seek Christian marriage counseling and not seek instruction from the secular world. 3. A Biblical marriage is between one man and one woman for life. •“And the Lord God formed Adam from the dust of the ground…” (Gen 2:7) •“Then the Lord God made women form the rib of man he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, ‘this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, for she was taken from man. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” (Genesis 2: 22-24) •“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.” (Mark 10:9) (Read Mark 10: 1-9) II. God’s Word states, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.” (vs. 22) A. Submission is an act of love, demonstrating a wife’s trust in her husband. 1. Women, only marry a man that you can trust your life with. (And your children’s life) B. God in his great love for the woman, that he has created, has placed her in the care and protection of her husband. C. Wives in submitting, are not called to lose their identity as a person, but to play a vital role, as a team player in the marriage. III. God’s Word also states, “Husbands love your wives, just as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her.” (vs. 25) A. Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially. 1. Husbands are called to have their wives’ best interest in mind. 2. Husbands are called to provide opportunities for their wives to be all that God wants them to be. 3. Husband are called to protect their wives physically, emotionally, and spiritually. B. Husbands are not to “lord it over” their wives’. •Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. In stead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Matthew 25:28) IV. God’s Word states, “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves him self, and the wife must respect her husband.” (vs. 33) A. Apostle Paul recognizes both the Husband and wife must engage in what God has called them to do to make the marriage work. 1. What God calls Husbands and Wives to do is a “Big Ask”, but God has called all Christian through the centuries to do hard things. The Greatest of all was Jesus! |

“Be Imitators of God”
Text: Ephesians 5: 1-21
Thesis: God is both a Loving God and a Just God, and to be like God, requires us to be both loving and just.
I. The Apostle Paul proclaims, if we are to “Imitate God” we must love like God. (vs1-2)
A. “As dearly loved children…live a life of love.” (1a)
• “Love in this instance is not eros, the love of natural relationships; nor philia, the love of friendship; but
agape, the love of pure self-giving, that asks for nothing in return and that wishes only for the well-being of the
one to whom it is given. Agape is God’s love, and He gives it to men most fully in the gift of himself as the Holy
Spirit. He thus gives Himself that men might “live in love.” (BBC, Ephesians, page 227-228)
B. “Just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” (vs2)
1. We are called in Love to sacrifice ourselves to God for the sake of others so that they might come to
know Jesus.
• “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and
pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” (Romans 12:1)
II. The Apostle Paul reveals in verse 3-4 examples of the Perversion of God’s love.
A. Doing the Christian life right, matters to God.
1. “Be Holy as I am Holy” is the call of God to all Christians.
2. “But among you there must not be even a hint of…”
B. There are some that think it is ok to live a permissive life because God must forgive me. But scripture
teaches that “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7)
III. The Apostle Paul warns in verses 5-7, there is a penalty for perversion.
A. God is not only a loving God, but He is also a just God.
1. There are negative consequences to breaking God’s law; some are intrinsic, others come from God’s
judgment.
• “In missing the Kingdom these perverters of love fall under the heavy hand of the righteous anger of God.
Already they are its objects (cf. 2:3), but in that last day they will feel the fury of it.” (BBC, Ephesians, page
230)
2. God is a God of His Word!
IV. The Apostle Paul in verses 8-11 reveals there is a great contrast between the Spiritual light of Christ and
the evil of this world.
A. The “Good News” is:
• “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
(2 cor. 5:17)
• “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the
blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
• “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until
the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 1:6)
V. The Apostle Paul in verses 15-21 encourages believers to live a Holy life, “because the days are evil.”
A. The Christian will stand out in darkened world.
• “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God
without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.”
(Phil. 2:15)

Faithful To Sanctify
1. The process of sanctification is founded upon the acceptance of the
(Biblical) truth that Jesus loves us.
-Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 and 12-24.
2. God does not appoint us to suffer (wrath) (1 Thes. 5:9).
God appoints us to sanctification through him which means there is
(Redemption) for suffering.
3. Sanctification thrives in (Community) because God made us to be a communal
entity (Matt. 18:20).
4. We are (Called) to be faithful to God, just as God is faithful to us.

Extend Grace to Your Fellow Believer
Text: Ephesians 4:29-32
Thesis: Extending grace to another instead of holding a grudge is following the example of
God when He extends Grace to us in Jesus Christ.
I. The Apostle Paul recognizes it is God’s will for believers to love each other and get along
with one another.
A. The apostle Paul made it clear that if we are not “building others up” (vs29), “we are grieving
the Holy Spirit of God.” (vs30a)
1. God desires for His family, who are filled with His Spirit to be a wholesome, loving family.
2. The things that destroy family unity and harmony are “bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and
slander, and all forms of malice.” (Vs31b)
3. God’s Word says, “Get rid of all…” (vs30a)
a. The “Good News” is, we can, by the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us.
b. A perfect example is the transformation in the Apostle Paul’s life, from that of “Saul” into
“Paul”.
4. If the family of God fails to love and get along with one another, we violate the second great
command.
• “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all
your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater
than these.” (Mark 12:29-31)
B. The Apostle Paul is calling the listener to be proactive, in their relationships, by seeking ways to
“build each other up.”
1. What are some ways you can build up your fellow believer?
2. The Apostle Paul instructs us to “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,
just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Vs 32)
C. The truth is that we need each other more in these “last Days, than ever.
1. The Apostle Paul is calling us to “Extend Grace” to our fellow believer as God extended grace to
(__________)in Christ Jesus.
• “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not
condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to
you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For
with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:36-38)

Impure Speech
Text: Ephesians 4:25-29
Thesis: Jesus said, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every
empty word they have spoken.” (Matthew 12:36)
I. The Apostle Paul warns against using “impure speech”. (vs29a))
A. The Greek word the Apostle uses for “unwholesome or impure is sapros which means “putrid, vile, morally
unwholesome.
1. This type of language is not Christ-like and is unbecoming for a Christian.
2. Jesus was not offended by the behavior and language of non-believers but was appalled at the bad
behavior from the religious leaders.
a. He called the religious leaders “snakes and vipers”; while defending the sinner by saying, “It is
the sick who need a physician.”
3. The Christian, because they have experience spiritual salvation and have the Holy Spirit living within
them are called to a higher standard of living.
4. The writer to the book of James teaches the tongue must be controlled because it has the power to either
curse or bless. (Read James 3:1-12).
B. How we speak is a learned behavior and God can transform our speech habits.
• “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
1. The “Good News” is by the power of God, through Jesus Christ and the infilling of the Holy Spirit we
can change!!!
2. As parents and grandparents guard the listening ears of your children from impure speech.
• “Kids are like tape recorders, who are always recording; you just cannot control the play back button.”
(Unknown)
II. The Apostle Paul also states the “talk that comes out of our mouths should only be what is helpful in
building others up according to their need, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Vs 29b)
A. Part of our being made in the image of God is the ability to speak.
• “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.” (Gen.1:3)
• For the director of music. A psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim
the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.”
(Psalms 19:1-2)
B. We are called “to be Holy as God is Holy.”
• But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am
holy.”(1 Peter 1:15-16)
