Thanksgiving Beginnings
Text: Matthew 19: 29-30
Thesis: Our “Pilgrim Fathers” took time out to thank God for all divine guidance and
blessings.
1. Thanksgiving was celebrated by pilgrims who left their native land in search of
“freedom to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience.” (Governor
William Bradford)
A. Our “Pilgrim Fathers” left houses and lands and families for
spiritual reasons.
* “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as
well (Matthew 6:33).”
1. The cultural changes in England prohibited them from worshipping God
according to the dictates of their own conscience.
2. Our forefathers demonstrated the Spirit of Christ that empowered them to make extreme sacrifices
in order to serve God.
B. The Holy Spirit can empower you to make sacrifices that will enable you to do the
following:
* Establish a relationship with God
* Cherish your spouse.
* Love your children.
* Transform your house into a home.
* Pray for our nation.
* To be thankful.
C. Our “Pilgrim Fathers” demonstrated undaunted courage in doing God’s will.
2. Thanksgiving began as a religious holiday.
A. The First pilgrims gathered in Church to thank God for his divine
protection and blessing.
1. To be Christ like (Christian) is to be thankful.
2. According to God’s word, failing to thank God is the first step to a downward course.
* “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but
their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened (Romans 1:21; see 1:22-25
for more).”
3. When we thank God, we build a spiritual hedge of protection around us.
B. When we thank God, we protect ourselves from the following:
* Pride and arrogance.
* A false sense of security.
* Discontentment.

The Lord Is My Banner
Text: Exodus 17:8-16 & Ephesians 6:19
Thesis: God works through his leadership to bring victory to His People
1. “The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites (Vs. 8).”
A. The Amalekites were descendants of Esau (See Genesis 36:12 & 16).
B. The Amalekites disregarded God and His people and brought God’s
judgement on themselves.
*“Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he
sows (Galatians 6:7).”
*“So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God (Romans 14:2).”
*“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes
judgment (Hebrews 9:27).”
2. The helper of Moses was Joshua (Vs. 9-10).
A. Joshua was mentioned here for the first time. He was mentioned in
Numbers 13:16 as “Hoshea but Moses named him Joshua” which means “Jehovah is our
Savior.”
B. In this account Moses called on Joshua to form an army.
1. The weapons used by Joshua were probably taken from the Egyptians after their defeat by God in
the Red Sea.
C. Moses, Aaron and Hur observed the battle from the top of the hill.
3. “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he
lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning (Vs. 11).”
A. God chose to use Moses, the leader of Israel, as the conduit for his power to flow through to
bring victory to the entire Nation of Israel.
1. God chose Moses at the “Burning Bush” to deliver and lead the nation of Israel.
* “Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led
the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the
angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though
the bush was on fire t did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange
sight - why the bush does not burn up.” When The Lord saw that he had gone over to look,
God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” (Exodus 3:1-4)
2. God continues to raise up leaders today to serve in the building of the “Kingdom of God”.
* “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the
pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be
built up... (Ephesians 4:11-12)”
B. So long as Moses held up his arms and hands up Joshua and the army were victorious.
C. When Moses’ arms grew tired and was no longer able to hold them in the air, Joshua and the
army began to lose the battle.
D. Aaron and Hur propped up Moses’ arm up to the Lord and Joshua and the army of God were
victorious in battle. (Read Exodus 17:15-16)
Two Principles:
1. Always lift high the name of Jesus.
*“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to
myself (John 12:32).”
2. Always lift your leadership in prayer.
*“Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as
happened among you… (2 Thessalonians 3:1, ESV)”
*“Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make
known the mystery of the gospel… (Ephesians 6:9)”

Stand Firm In your Faith and Pray
Text: Ephesians 6:10-20 (vs 18-20)
Thesis: Prayer will produce victory in our Spiritual battles.
1. We must “Pray in the Spirit” (Vs. 18a).
A. Paul is not referring to the human spirit of a “team-spirit” but the
Holy Spirit of God.
B. The Holy Spirit of God lives within every “born again”
(See John 3:5-8) Christian.
1. The Holy Spirit can present requests to God, concerning a
Christian’s needs, that they cannot even articulate.
*In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know
what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through
wordless groans (Romans 8:26-27).”
2. There needs to be a constancy in prayer (vs. 18b)
A. Paul instructs us to pray “on all occasions” (NIV) or “always” (KJV).
* “Always” is the translation of the Greek phrase “en panti Kairo”. It can be
translated “in every time or season” (BBC, Ephesians, page 267).
1. Do not be concerned about being repetitious in prayer that may
appear to be “Babbling” (as Jesus referred to in Matthew 6:7) if your
heart is concerned about a genuine need.
* “Pray without ceasing” (KJV) or “continually” (NIV)
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17
3. We are taught to “always keep on praying for the saints” (vs. 18c)
A. “Always keep on” is promoting Christian perseverance in battle.
1. When things are difficult and you grow “tired and weary”, do not stop praying.
* “And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.”
- 2 Thessalonians 3:13)
*Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if you we
not give up (Galatians 6:9).”
B. “Pray for all of the Saints.”
1. Your fellow Christians are your comrades in the fight against evil.
2. Christians must stay unified in prayer.
* “The Family that prays together, stays together.”
3. The knowledge of your Church family praying for you will keep you strong in times
of absence.
*Christians in ungodly nations have testified that they
remained strong because they knew Christians in America
were praying for them.
4. Prayer ensures victory for the Christian!
* “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be
healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective (James 5:16).”
“Prayer is the Key to Power”

Stand Firm In your Faith
Part III
Text: Ephesians 6:1-20 (vs 16-17)
Thesis: God has been calling believers to “Stand Firm” from the beginning and not to
panic and run.
Stand Firm in your Faith!
1. The Belt of Truth
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
3. The Boots of the Gospel of Peace
See Last Sunday’s Sermon, October 24, 2021
4. The Shield of Faith (vs. 16)
A. The Apostle Paul teaches the Christian is under attack from Satan.
*Jesus proclaims: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life and
have it to the full (John 10:10).”
*Peter warns: “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls
around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).”
B. Peter knows this first hand because he fell victim to Satan’s attack even after Jesus warned
him.
*“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat (Luke 22:31).”
C. The faith that Paul is referring to is a total faith in Christ for your
salvation and a daily reliance upon Christ as your Lord. Jesus wants to be your Lord and Savior!
D. A Christian’s ultimate security is not in self, others, the government,
or human resources for their protection.
5. The Helmet of Salvation (vs. 17a)
A. This piece of military armor is created to protect the head which is a vital part of the human
body.
* “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the
duties of your ministry (2 Timothy 4:5).”
* “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and
perfect will (Romans 12:2).”
* “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the
word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV).”
6. The Sword of the Spirit (vs. 17b)
A. The phrase “Sword of the Spirit” has been translated two ways:
1. It is the voice of God speaking to your mind through the Holy Spirit.
* “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the
truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and
he will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).”
B. It is the written Word of God, the Bible.
* “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,
correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
good work (2 Timothy 3:17).”
* “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any
double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts
and attitudes of the heart
(Hebrews 4:12).”
* “Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own
interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human,
spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21).”

Stand Firm In your Faith
Part II
Text: Ephesians 6:1-20 (vs 13-17)
Thesis: God has been calling believers to “Stand Firm” from the beginning and not to panic and run.
- Stand Firm in your Faith in God through Jesus Christ. (Vs 14)
“By keeping themselves ‘strong in the Lord’, that is equipping themselves with God’s armor, Christians can successfully win the fight against the forces of evil. This is Paul’s assurance.” (BBC, Eph. Page 262)
- With God and keeping His battle strategy, we can win!
“I have read the last chapter of the Bible and we win” (Unknown)
* “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
* “I can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.” (Philippians 4:13)
- Paul proclaims that God commands all Christians to “put on the full armor of God.” (Vs 13)
- “The Belt of Truth” (vs14a)
- Philosophies, traditions, reason, and creeds fail but the Truth of God will withstand all opposition and the test of time.
* “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
* “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.” (Judges 21:25)
- Be aware of those who teach “situational ethics.”
- Be aware of those who no longer teach the “Absolutes of God”
- Be aware of those who teach “secular humanism.”
* “Jesus said, But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” (John 16:13)
- “The Breastplate of Righteousness.”
- The only real righteousness we have is due to our relationship with Christ.
* “All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.” (Isaiah 64:6)
“William Barclay writes, ‘When a man (person) is clothed in righteousness he Is impregnable. Words are no defense in accusation, but a good live is.”
- Guard your heart, it is a vital organ, by putting on the “Breastplate”.
- Religious leaders in Paul’s day had great head knowledge but hard hearts.
* Jesus told the religious leaders, “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire
mercy, not sacrifice.’ (Matthew 9:13)
* “Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,”
(Mathew 24:12)
- “The Sandals of the Gospel” (vs 15)
- A well fit sandal (shoe or boot) gave the soldier a stability that produced peace in battle. (Do not be caught bare footed in battle.)
- The peace of the Gospel allows you to live in a state of readiness and not panic when you are called upon to share the “Good News”.
* “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7)
* “And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15)
