The Least Were Recognized As The Greatest
Text: Luke 2:8-20; 9:47-48
Thesis: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
- John 3:16
1. “For God so loved the world...” (John 3:16a)
A. “The world” included everyone.
1. The birth announcement from God came first to some Shepherds.
a. The shepherds were the least of them.
* “Shepherds were despised by the orthodox good people of the day. They were quite unable to
keep the details of the ceremonial law; they could not observe all the meticulous hand-washings and rules and
regulations. Their
flock made far too constant demands on them; and so the orthodox looked down on them. It was
to simple men of the fields that God’s message first came.”
William Barclay
2. God sent a Grand delegation to these lowly shepherds.
* “An angel appeared to them… Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with
the angel.”
Luke 2:9 & 13
2. “...That He gave His one and only Son...” (John 3:16b)
A. The angels proclaim the birth of the Savior.
* “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:11
B. Jesus is the one and only Savior sent by God.
* “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.”
John 14:6
3. “...Whoever believes in Him shall not perish…” (John 3:16c)
A. The shepherds responded to God’s call to seek out Jesus.
B. God wants every person to have the same response that the
Shepherds had.
* “...The shepherds said, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see...”
Luke 2:15

The Story That Never Grows Old
Text: Luke 2:1-7
Thesis: God the Son, left heaven and came to earth to live among us and
“to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Matthew 20:28
1. Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King. (Jesus is the King of Kings…)
A. The prophet said, He would be called Emmanuel which means, “God with us.”
* “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will be
with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” - - which means, “God with us.”
Matthew 1:22-23
* “But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be
with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the
Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house
of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Luke 1:30-33
B. The same Jesus was involved with the Triune God-head in creating the world in which we
live.
* “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were
created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all
things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Colossians 1:15-17
2. Jesus left Heaven and came to earth to live as one of us.
A. It is a miracle - “God became flesh”
* “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was
with God in the beginning... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the
glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:1-2 & 14
B. Jesus left the Glory of Heaven to demonstrate how much He loves us.
* “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still
sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8
3. Jesus was born in Bethlehem to be our Savior.
A. The King of Kings came to be the Lamb of God that was crucified for our sins.
* “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be
for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:10-11

concerned about Mary’s mental and physical condition.
3. The angel Gabriel proclaims the incarnation miracle.
A. Gabriel explains to Mary God’s salvation plan.

* “The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:35
D. Gabriel recognizes her confusion and adds two reasons to believe.
1st - “Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said
to be barren is in her sixth month.”
Luke 1:36-37
2nd - “For nothing is impossible with God.”
Luke 1:36-37
E. Mary acknowledges and accepts God’s plan for her life.
* “I am the Lord’s Servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel
left her.”
Luke 1:38

The Undecided Will Be Brought to a Place of Decision
Text: Matthew 1:18-25
Thesis: The Angel of God increases the “Faith” of Joseph.
Action Step: The decisions I make will reflect the knowledge of God’s will and my “Faith”
level.
1. Joseph found himself in a precarious position. (Vs. 18-19)
A. It was no fault of his own.
B. Joseph was in a mental quandary.
C. The Angel of the Lord brings wisdom.

all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5
Wisdom is just a prayer away

(Vs. 20-23)
A. Joseph was considering the normal response.
1. Joseph possessed the legal and scriptural right to divorce Mary.
2. Joseph chose to take the high road.

Everyone Needs To Belong
Text: Philippians 1:3-5
Thesis: The Church is the family of God where everyone is loved and accepted.
Action Step: “Do not be anxious about anything (Philippians 4:6)”, but become actively
involved with your church family.
1. Everyone needs to experience the warmth of God’s family called the Church.
A. The Apostle Paul carries with him a treasure of great memories of the Church.
1. Memories we cherish - meals shared with laughter, mountain top experiences with God, the
celebration of new births, the building of a new worship facility, and more!
2. Present Events we enjoy - we are together again.
3. Future Dreams anticipated - “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived, what
God has prepared for those who love him.”
1 Corinthians 2:9
2. Everyone needs the loving prayers of those who care.
A. The Apostle Paul “always prays with joy”. (Vs. 4a)
1. Fervency originates in love.
* “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man (person) availeth much.”
James 5:6b KJV
2. It is a pleasure to pray for a person you love.
3. Everyone needs to form a “partnership in the Gospel” (Vs. 5a)
A. The Apostle Paul found comfort in knowing he was not serving Christ alone.
1. Paul was serving Christ in a Roman prison at the same time his fellow Christians were serving
Christ in Philippi.
2. There is a connection established when two or more people partner together.
* “Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done
for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.”
Mathew 18:19-20
3. There is strength in numbers.
* “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of
three strands is not quickly broken.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12
4. Everyone needs to belong to the family of God.
A. Accept Christ as your personal Savior and become a part of
the universal Church.
B. Commit to a local Church family and experience the love
of Jesus Christ.
