We Are All One In Christ
Text: James 1:9-11
Thesis: “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”
- Matthew 3:26
1. In the Church there are to be NO social / class distinctions.
A. Economic status has divided Christians throughout the ages.
B. God’s Word teaches us, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, for
you are all one in Christ.”
Galatians 3:28
2. James seeks to elevate the status of the poor. (Vs. 9)
A. James declares a profound mystery when he states, “The brother in humble circumstances
ought to take pride in his high position.”
B. Our personal value is not determined by the size of our bank account.
1. Everyone is made in the image of God.
* “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he
created them; male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27
2. Our identity and worth is determined by God, not another person or even self.
3. Jesus reminds us of the widows offering. (Luke 21:1-4)
3. James reminds the rich of the true source of wealth. (Vs. 10)
A. God is the one who is in control over life and death.
1. Wealth can produce a false sense of security.
a. James is inferring in his statement of “low position”, to mean weak or
powerless to prevent death even though you may have wealth.
B. This is what Jesus was teaching in Luke 12:13-21 in the
parable of the rich fool.
2. The wealthy can “take pride in their low position” if they realize they still need God.
a. You can be wealthy and be an excellent Christian if it is
surrendered to God.
b. Whether rich or poor we all will die the first death and
everyone needs the Salvation of Jesus Christ.
* “Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”
See Hebrews 9:27-28

A Unified Soul
Text: James 1:1-8
Thesis: A Double minded person is unstable in all he does, but a
person with a “Unified Soul” will see their prayers answered.
1. God is calling all Christians to be single minded. (vs. 1-8)
A. James begins this book of the Bible by declaring his single
mindedness (vs. 1).
* “James a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.”
1. James had settled the big question in his heart, “Who do
you serve?”
a. Do you serve self, the world and its pleasures or can you proclaim as James
did, I am “a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ”?
B. James in his open declaration, reveals that he is not ashamed of the Lord Jesus Christ.
* “If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and
sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s
glory with the holy angels.”
Mark 8:38
1. Peter denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed but Jesus
reinstated him.
2. Paul , after his conversion, makes a similar statement as James. He states, “I am not
ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation
of everyone who believes, first for the Jew Romans 1:16 |
and then for the Gentiles.” |
3. God is calling you and I to settle it in our hearts in whom we serve have the courage to declare it to the world. |
and |
C. James reveals that a double minded person is unstable in all that he does.
1. The Greek word for double minded is dipsychos and literally | means, |
“a two-souled, a man of divided affections and unsubdued worlds.” |
will, wishing to secure both |
D. James points out that if we are double minded that our prayers will not be
answered.
* “That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord.”
James 1:7
E. James reveals that a double minded person is “Unstable” in all areas of their lives.
1. Joshua as the retiring leader of Israel gives God’s people this choice:
* “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom
you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in
whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15

The Anointed One
Text: Luke 4:14-22
Thesis: “A man with a message will always command an audience.”
- Dr. William Barclay
1. Jesus makes a decision to go home to Nazareth.
* “He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the
Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom...”
Luke 4:16
A. Nazareth is not a tiny village; it is a well populated area.
B. Nazareth had upwards of 20,000 inhabitants, roughly the size of Kuna or Mountain Home.
C. Nazareth was located near major trade roads.
“It is wrong to think of Jesus as being brought up in a backwater; he was brought up in a town in sight of
history and with the traffic of the world almost at its doors.”
Dr. William Barclay
* “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.”
John 1:46
2. While in his hometown, Jesus publicly declares his mission!
A. Jesus had already established himself as someone worthy to speak in the synagogue.
* “He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.”
Luke 4:15
B. Jesus chose a scripture that is normally read on the morning of the day of atonement, the
holiest day of the year for Jews.
1. The priest would offer the annual sacrifice to atone for sin.
3. The people of Nazareth had a hard time with this version of Jesus.
* “...Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.”
Luke 4:22
A. Jesus had a plan for the world, and it was not one that the people of
Nazareth expected.
* “But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter.
“Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely
human concerns.”
Mark 8:33
* “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the
Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and
my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9
“Men’s hearts were hungry for the word of life, and they had not yet realized what a blow he was to strike at the
orthodoxy of his time.”
Dr. William Barclay
Self Check:
Do I proclaim good news to the poor?
a
Do I proclaim freedom for prisoners?
a
Do I help the recovery of sight for the blind?
a
Do I help set the oppressed free?
a
Do I proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor?

The First Revelation of Glory
Text: John 2:1-11
Thesis: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,
the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
1. Jesus and his disciples go to a Wedding Feast.
A. In Jewish culture, a wedding celebration could last for several days!
B. The wine unexpectedly runs out. This is a disaster for the families
involved.
* “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more Wine.”
John 2:3
* “And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.”
John 2:3 KJV
“This amounted to a social catastrophe for the families of the bride and groom. There is a Jewish saying “Without wine there is no joy,” and this would be particularly true at a festive occasion such as a
wedding.” Beacon Bible Commentary
2. Jesus is put on the spot by his mother.
* “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
John 2:4
* “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they
will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you
need before you ask him.”
Matthew 6:7-8
A. Jesus knew exactly what was needed for this wedding party.
3. A mother knows best!
* “His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:5
A. Mary had faith in her son.
* “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Hebrews 11:1
B. We can trust Jesus to be present in the happenings of our everyday lives.
4. Jesus delivers the best of the best, using stone jars and water.
A. Stone Jars are used to clean hands and feet: See Leviticus Chapters 11-16
B. Out of the stone jars comes the best wine at the party!
C. Jesus transforms ordinary things into great things!
* “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s
will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2

Joy Unspeakable and Full of Glory
Text: James 1:1-4
Thesis: Joy is produced within us by the power of God.
1. “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you experience trials of many”, because it
will ensure that we do not become stagnant in our Spiritual growth.
A. The expectation level is enormous from a human standpoint. It would be more than enough to
expect us to be joyful in troubles but “Pure” joy?
“Consider it pure joy”.
1. This type of expectation can only be accomplished by the power of God.
* Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
a. Stephen experienced pure joy at his execution because the
glory of God was upon him.
* “He looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God.”
Read Acts 7:54-60
B. James’ wording makes it clear that as Christians we will have trials in this life as Christians. It
is inevitable!
“My brothers, whenever…”
* “Jesus said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” |
world you will |
C. Trials will keep us alive in Christ! If we are not growing, we are dying and will become
stagnant in our Faith.
1. Jesus wants us to experience the Living Waters and not become
stagnant waters.
* “Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would
have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4:10
2. The purpose of trials is not to defeat us but make us stronger.
* “Because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”
3. James has in mind the type of trial that an Athlete might experience to make them
stronger.
D. Jesus “for the joy set before Him” endured the cross.

The Future is Nothing to Fear with God - January 2, 2022

The Future Is Nothing To Fear With God
Text: Matthew 2:13-23
Thesis: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may
have life and have it to the full.”
- John 10:10
1. Do not attempt to face the future alone. Satan is warring against the
children of God.
* Jesus said “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy...”
A. Joseph and Mary were warned by “An Angel of the Lord… Herod is
going to search for the child and kill him.” (Vs. 13)
1. We must not be naïve; we have an enemy that seeks to take our life.
a. The enemy, Satan is a deceiver.
b. An example is in “The Garden of Eden”.
* “Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The
woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:13
2. Jesus goes the extra mile in trying to warn us about deception in the end times.
* “Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming ‘I am
the Christ,’ and will deceive many… If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake
of the elect those days will be shortened. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘There
he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to
deceive even the elect - if that were possible.”
Matthew 24:4-5 & 22-24
3. God’s word warns us that Satan will be on a killing rampage in the last days.
* “But woe to the earth and the sea because the devil has gone down to you! He is filled with fury because
he knows that his time is short.”
Revelation 12:12
4. Peter gives us a warning and instructions concerning the evil one.
* “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for
someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” |
know that your brothers 1 Peter 5:8-9 |
2. Face the future with God close by your side! Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life,
and have it to the full.”
A. Joseph recognized the voice of God and led his family according to God’s instruction. (Vs. 14
& 15)
B. Mary was a strong woman of Faith, and it is evidenced in her encounter with the Angel
Gabriel.
* “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May it be to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.”
Luke 1:38
C. Joseph and Mary were obedient to God’s plan.
* “And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
Matthew 2:14-15
Action Steps:
1. Renew your commitment to God:
* “For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37
2. Renew your commitment to God’s Word.
* “If possible, even the very elect would be deceived.”
Matthew 24:24
3. Renew your commitment to prayer.
* “Prayer is the key to power.”
4. Renew your commitment to share the “Good News” of Jesus.
* “Jesus came to seek…” Luke 19:10
* “Jesus tarries… not wanting anyone to perish.”
2 Peter 3:9
5. Renew your commitment to Sunday worship.
* “Forsake not the assembling together…” Hebrews 10:25
