Favoritism Violates the Law of Love
Text: James 2:1-13
Thesis: God calls the believer to keep the “royal law found in scripture, ‘love your neighbor as
yourself’”. James 2:8
1. God commands believers not to show favoritism. He states it
emphatically, “Don’t”. See James 2:1
Favoritism is, “the unfair practice of treating some people better than others, the showing of
special favor or partiality to a particular person or persons.”
A. James gives example of favoritism being practiced in the Church.
Read Vss. 1a-4
1. The Church is called to be a role model to the world of God’s plan for
humanity.
B. It is spiritually and morally wrong to discriminate against another person solely on their
economic status, race, gender, color, language, size, family, or education level.”
C. The Bible makes it clear that everyone is made in the image of God.
• “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he
created them.”
Genesis 1:27
D. The word of God says favoritism is a sin.
Read Vss. 8-11
1. Favoritism violates the 2nd Great Command or as James calls it the Royal Law.
a. Jesus said, “All of the law and the prophets hang on the 1stand 2nd Great commands.”
2. The Gospel promotes Unity not Uniformity.
A. A Biblical definition of Spiritual unity:
“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and
one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.”
Ephesians 4:3-6
B. Uniformity is concerned with the outward appearance being the same.
C. God loves diversity.
1. God’s creation is full of variety.
2. We should celebrate God’s creation plan.
3. We must mature, and move past having to be around only those like us.
3. This issue is of such a serious nature we are reminded that “Mercy
triumphs over judgment.” Read vss. 12-13

True Christians are People of Action
Text: James 1:19-25
Thesis: Jesus said, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”
John 14:15 NIV 1983
1. God reveals to us through James that just listening is not enough.
• “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
James 1:22
A. James states earlier, “Everyone should be quick to listen” but this is
only the beginning.
B. James adds to this command: “do what it says.”
• Jesus states it another way: “If you love me, you will obey what I command.”
John 14:15 NIV 1983
1. God is not interested in cheap talk or your ability to memorize knowledge; He demands
action and obedience.
• “The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they
have been taught.”
Isaiah 29:13
C. James gives an illustration of this kind of person in verses 23 & 24:
• He states: “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who
looks at his face in a mirror, and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately
forgets what he looks like.”
1. You can read the Word daily and attend Church every time the doors are open but unless you
become obedient to the Word it is meaningless and you “deceive
yourself.”
“It is not how high you jump on Sunday morning that counts but how straight you walk when
you leave the Church!”
Unknown
2. God is calling people to be “born-again” and live “holy” lives.
“Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word
planted in you, which can save you.”
James 1:21
A. To be “born-again” you must do more than listen to the Word. You must repent of your
sin (Revelation 3:19) and invite Jesus into your life (Revelation 3:30).
B. God is calling every Christian to live “holy” lives.
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because
I am holy.”
1 Peter 1:15-16
C. The Apostle Paul states God is calling Christians to consecrate their lives to God.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a
living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform
to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God’s will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

God Gave Us Two Ears and only One Mouth for a Reason
Text: James 1:19-20
Thesis: “For God did not give us a Spirit of timidity, but a Spirit of power, of love and self-discipline.”
2 Timothy 1:7 NIV 1983
1. James states, “Everyone should be quick to listen.” (Vs. 19a)
A. Sometimes our appearance as being a good listener may be deceptive.
1. Our silence may be due to our daydreaming or seeking an opportunity to speak.
B. Being a good listener may mean recognizing the person sharing with us doesn’t want us
telling them how to fix the problem.
C. Focused listening reveals we are truly interested in what the person has to say.
1. Putting down the cell phone will aid in focused listening.
f
2. James also states, “Everyone should be slow to speak.” (Vs. 19b)
A. Being slow to speak means giving another person an opportunity to speak.
1. Conversation is at least a two-way street. A single exchange of words is a lecture not a
conversation.
B. Being slow to speak means choosing your words carefully.
C. Being slow to speak may mean saying nothing at all.
D. Being slow to speak may mean you have thought the situation through and have concluded
that you must speak the Truth in love.
3. James adds further wisdom by stating, “Everyone should be slow to
anger.” (Vs. 19b-20)
A. James makes it clear that uncontrolled anger can damage a Christian’s
personal life and the Kingdom of God.
1. Confess your sin to God and seek the Holy Spirits’ help.
B. Controlled anger is a healthy human emotion.
• The Apostle Paul states, “In your anger do not sin; do not let the sun go down while you are still
angry.”
• “For Man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.”
James 1:20b

“God Will Go Before You”
Text: Deuteronomy 31:1-8
Thesis: God promises to “go before us”, “Go with us”, and “He will never leave or forsake
us.”
1. God contends with all our challenges. (Vs. 1-5)
A. Moses is old, so God has found him a replacement in Joshua.
B. God has fought numerous battles for Israel in the past and promises to
destroy the nations (battles) before them. (Vs. 3)
C. God has fought numerous battles for us in the past and He will
“Go before us” and give us victory in life.
*“I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.”
Isaiah 49:25
1. God specializes in the challenge of our lives. They may come in the form of
ministry goals, difficulties at work or with other people.
s
a. Give your challenges to God by name so that “He can contend
with those that contend with you.”
b. Often the greatest heart-breaking challenges we face as parents,
are our children or grandchildren. (Do they know Jesus?)
c. God promises, “and your children I will save.”
f
2. God commands us to face the future with courage because He is
already there. (Vs 6)
*“I can do all things through Christ who gives us strength.”
Philippians 4:13
A. God is in the future before we arrive.
A. Courage in the Lord is commendable!
1. What is God calling you to do for Him in the 2022-2023 Church year that will bring him glory?
2. It is ok you if have never tried doing (Name God’s Calling) before.
*“The truth of it is, I had never preached until the first time.”
Pastor Chuck
3. God addresses the Leaders of the people to be Spiritually strong. (Vs. 7-8)
A. Moses addressed Joshua in front of the people.
B. The people take their cue from their leadership, so lead by example.
“The Church will rise no higher than the commitment of their leadership.”
Unknown
C. Courageous Christian leadership is contagious.
“Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand the spines of others are stiffened.”
The Reverend Billy Graham

Lead us not into Temptation - February 13, 2022

with Pastor Chuck Ryan.
“Lead us not into Temptation”
Text: James 1:12-18
Thesis: Every Christian is tempted to sin but by the power of the Holy Spirit we do not
have to yield to temptation.
1. While experiencing trials or stress some may be tempted to alleviate their pressures
through unethical or immoral ways. (Vs. 12)
A. The devil tempted Jesus to sin during his 40 days of fasting in the desert.
See Matthew 4:1-11
*“For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:15-16
1. Be aware that temptations may come during extreme physical and mental fatigue.
f
B. Jesus’ Temptation came directly following a spiritually high moment.
1. Be aware that temptation may come when you are doing great things for See Mark 1:9-13 |
God. |
2. Temptation does not come from God. (Vs. 13 & 16-17)
A. God may allow you to experience trials to strengthen you, but he will
never entice you to sin.
3. Temptation comes from within a person. (Vs. 14)
A. Temptations can be unique to everyone.
B. Avoid the things that tempt you.
C. Do not deceive yourself by placing false confidence in your own strengths.
4. By the power of the Holy Spirit, it is possible to resist yielding to
temptation.
*“...but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are -- yet without sin.”
Hebrews 4:16
*“Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being
tempted.”
Hebrews 2:18
A. Break the sin cycle.
1. Give your temptations to Jesus
*“I can do everything through him who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13
2. Confess your sin to Jesus.
*“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us
from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
*“Jesus declared, “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
John 8:11
3. “Walk in the light, as he is in the light.”
1 John 1:7
