The Reality of Our Immortality
Text: Matthew 28:1-10 & John 11:25
Thesis: God moves Heaven and earth to provide us with Immortality.
1. The Resurrection from a human standpoint was unexpected.
A. The Ladies went to the tomb to prepare the lifeless body of Jesus.
Expectations were low, reality is they were clueless to the Resurrection.
B. The ladies were possibly experiencing post-traumatic shock after
witnessing the most horrifying brutal execution of their Savior and friend.
C. Jesus had told them prior to his death that the resurrection would take
place, but it was beyond human comprehension.
2. The Resurrection was literally and emotionally earth shaking.
A. Scripture states that a “violent earthquake” literally happened.
B. We also learn “an Angel of the Lord came down from heaven.”
C. God’s power was so magnificent that it caused the elite, highly trained
Roman soldiers to “shake like dead men”.
*“...that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on
earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus
Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:10-11
D. During this cataclysmic event God’s compassion is witnessed as the Angel
calms the fears of his faithful few.
3. The Resurrection was God’s Spiritual realignment of heaven & earth.
A. The tomb was rendered powerless.
B. The earthly body was transformed into a heavenly body.
See 1 Corinthians 15:42-55
1. Every person is mortal until they come to know Jesus Christ.
*“You are a mortal because you are mortal. This means that you are
an individual destined to die because you are susceptible to death.”

C. The King of Kings & Lord of Lords “rose a victor from the dark domain”.
*“Jesus has risen, Just as He said.”

D. God’s salvation master plan was complete.
1. Mankind’s final enemy was destroyed.
*“The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”
1 Corinthians 15:26
*“I want to know Christ-- yes, to know the power of his Resurrection
and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death...”

Disruptive Praise
Text: Luke 19:28-40
Thesis: We must praise God in such a way that brings glory to God and the world hears us!
1. Jesus for the past three years verbally taught that He was the Messiah, sent from God, to be the Savior of the world.
Now He will depict who He is, in this intentional bold action!
See Luke 19:28-36
A. Jesus in His grand entry into Jerusalem made a deliberate claim to be King,
Fulfilling the picture in Zechariah 9:9.
*“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

B. Many understood the deliberate claim of Jesus and responded in various ways.
*“It was such a dramatic action which Jesus planned now. He proposed to ride into Jerusalem in a way
that would be an unmistakable claim to be the Messiah, God’s anointed one.” William Barclay
2. There is a praise that is so profound that it captures the attention of bystanders! (Vss. 37-40)
A. The Pharisees disliked their praise because they could not accept Jesus’
claim to be the Messiah.
*“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through
me.” John 14:6
1. There will be those who dislike your praise.
3. There is a praise that is so pure that it glorifies God.
A. The praise of the disciples was disruptive to some. See Luke 19:37-38
*“...the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud
voices...” Luke 19:37
B. Jesus defends His disciples to the Pharisees.

*“Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” “I tell you,” he
| replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out!” 4. There is a praise that personally stirs the heart. |

A. Those that praised Jesus could not help themselves.
1. Praise will break you out of your comfort zone. It is ok that others notice!
*“Whenever you sing joyfully and loud, whenever you raise your hand, whenever you stand in
excitement, whenever you say amen in affirmation you will cease to be inconspicuous.”

2. Lead others to the throne room of God.
3. Don’t try to hide out in worship. Yes, Jesus said it’s ok to be
disruptive!
4. Forget self and others. Focus on God! There is a praise level that will challenge your dignity, but
God can help!
We must praise God in such a way that brings glory to God and the world hears us!

The Power of the Spoken Word
Text: James 3:1-2
Thesis: The privilege to teach comes with a warning because of the power of the spoken word.
a
1. James is not only concerned with “good works” but also “good words”.
A. The spoken word has its origins in the Godhead.
“Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.”
Genesis 1:26
B. Speech is a universal gift of God.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female
he created them.” Genesis 1:27
C. God has entrusted mankind with the gift of the spoken word with a
warning.
“Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach
| will be judged more strictly.” | James 3:1 |
| Jesus states, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every | |
| empty word they have spoken.” | Matthew 12:36 |
2. James is aware that there is an eagerness among some Christians to be
“teachers” (NIV) or “masters” (KJV).
A. Jesus in Matthew 23 reveals the seven “Woes” of the religious leaders of his day.
1. Beware of those who will never sit under the teaching of another
person but are willing to teach a class.
2. To be a good teacher you must have a teachable spirit.
a. Learn from others that are mature in Christ and who have
sound understanding of scriptures; either in person or from
“Biblical Commentaries”.
3. Too much authority given to an immature Christian can produce
arrogance.
“He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as
the devil.” 1 Timothy 3:6
3. James makes it clear that teaching is not only a position of honor but
responsibility.
A. Teachers need to teach the Truth of God and not their own opinions.
B. A teacher must practice good “Exegesis” and not “Eisegesis”.
The Apostle Paul Admonishes Young Timothy
* “Until I come, devote yourselves to the public reading of scripture, to
| preaching and teaching.” | 1 Timothy 4:13 |
| * “Watch your life and doctrine closely.” | 1 Timothy 2:15 |
* “Do your best to present yourselves to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15

Faith Without Deeds is Dead
Text: James 2:14-26
Thesis: A true “Faith” in Jesus Christ will naturally produce “Good Deeds a ”
1. James makes it clear that a person who “claims to have faith but has no deeds” his faith is worthless.
See James 2:14-17
A. James gives a litmus test to a person’s claim to have “faith” in verses 15-16.
1. He begs the question, “What is your response as a Christian when you see or hear of someone
who has a genuine need?”
“When James speaks of works, he is referring to good deeds which flow naturally from a heart filled with love
to God and love to man.” BBC on James, Page 215
2. A “born-again” (John 3) believer will fulfill the two great commands.
A. You will love your neighbor in a tangible way.
B. James sums up this section by stating, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by
action, is dead.” James 2:17
2. James also makes it clear that your “faith” must be more than mental assent.
See James 2:18-19
A. James presents a diagnostic statement to the professed believer when he states, “You believe that there
is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that --- and shudder.”
B. James is saying that you can have a cognitive understanding of God’s
existence and the entire Bible and not know God personally.
Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one
who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then
I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”
Matthew 7:21-23
1. The will of God is to invite Jesus into your lives. See John 3:16 & 2 Peter 3:9
2. The will of God is for every true believer to serve Jesus.
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for
us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his
people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12
C. James sums up this section by stating, “show me your faith without deeds and I will show you my
faith by what I do. James 2:18b
3. James further empowers his theological understanding of “Faith and Works” by using Abraham as an
example of a righteous person, who was a man of action! See James 2:20-26
“Abraham was considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar.” James 2:21
A. Abraham’s “Faith was made complete by what he did.”
1. Faith and deeds go together to produce righteousness.
2. James also highlights the Faith of Rahab.
“This is what the ancients were commended for.” See Hebrews 11
