“The Main Thing...”
Text: James 4:7-10; Romans 13:11
Thesis: James, in keeping with the theme of the other New Testament writers, is calling all
believers, to take their relationship with Christ with the utmost seriousness.
1. “Submit yourselves then, to God. (Vs. 7a)”
A. Submission, to most people, is a repulsive request and very challenging.
B. God is calling believers to surrender their heart, soul, mind, and strength to Him. This
encompasses their will and affections!
* “He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your strength and with all your mind…” Luke 10:27
C. Submission to God, through Jesus Christ, is the only path to eternal life.
* “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
* “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.” John 14:6
D. Submission to God is not just a “one time event” but a daily
acknowledgement of our need for God and our allegiance to God.
2. “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (Vs. 7b)”
A. The devil is a real being and not a figment of someone’s imagination.
* “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion
looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
B. The devil is not to be feared but resisted.
* “I can do everything through him (Christ) who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13
C. When we resist the devil, he cannot stand up against the Holy Spirit of God lives within you. He will flee. |
that powerfully |
3. God promises you and I, that if we “come near to God, he will come near to you.” (Vs. 8a)
A. This is a great promise that we need to exercise daily.
1. Stand on the promises of God!
4. “God is calling all Christians to become very serious about their salvation. (Vss. 8b-10)
A. When it comes to repentance, a sense of remorse is a sign of sincerity.
* The Apostle Paul also states: “And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has
already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now
than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11
B. If “we humble ourselves before the Lord, he will lift us up.” (Vs. 10)
“The Main Thing is to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing!”

“On Earth Peace to Men”
Text: James 4:1-6
Thesis: Christians must be humble, deny themselves and seek to follow God and His ways.
1. James causes the Christian to stop and reflect on their own lack of peace by asking,
“What causes fights and quarrels among you? (Vs. 1)
* “Wars without come from wars within.”
Unknown
A. Quarrels and fights originate with the desires within us.
1. “You want something and don’t get it. (Vs. 2)
a. Is it a need or a want?
B. James reveals two reasons why “you do not have” what you want.
1st - “You do not have because you do not ask.” (Vs. 2a)
* Jesus teaches: “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7
* “Prayer is the Key to Power”
2nd - “You do not receive, because you ask with the wrong motives,
that you may spend what you get on pleasures.”
* “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive,
disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving,
slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash,
conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God - having a form of godliness
but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5
2. James asks the Christian another thought provoking question: “Don’t you know that friendship
with the world is hatred toward God?”
A. When James refers to the “world” he is not speaking about God’s creation but the systemic
evil that has infiltrated society, government, businesses and pleasures.
B. The Christian should not be double minded.
* The Apostle Paul teaches: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is - his
good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2
3. James encourages the believer by reminding them that “God opposes the proud but gives grace
to the humble.” (Vs. 6)
A. There is freedom in surrendering to the will of God.
a. Materialism is an entrapment.
B. There is a peace in surrendering to God.
b. Seek to be on God’s side and cease trying to make Him fit into your lifestyle.
c. Jesus taught us to say: “Not my will but thine.”
d. Become a student of God and His ways.
* “As the heavens are above the earth so are His ways above our ways and His thoughts
above our thoughts.” Isaiah 55:9

A Mother Seeks Godly Wisdom - May 8, 2022

A Mother Seeks Godly Wisdom
Text: James 3:13-18; 1:5
Thesis: A Christian Mother’s thought process and actions should be controlled by Godly
Wisdom and not Earthly wisdom.
1. God’s word makes it clear that there are two types of wisdom that are diametrically
opposite of each other. (Vss. 13-17)
A. There is an earthly wisdom that does not reflect the nature or will of God, but is “unspiritual,
or the devil”. (See Vs. 15)
1. A person who lives by earthly wisdom will “harbor bitter envy and
selfish ambition in their heart.” (See Vs. 14)
“Envy is a feeling of resentment or discontent over another’s superior attainments,
endowments or possessions. A desire to possess the good of another.”
Funk and Wagnal
a. Godly mothers do not envy others but exemplify Contentment.
*“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
1 Timothy 6:6
b. Godly mothers teach their children to place people before
possessions in their value system.
1. A person with selfish ambition has a total disregard
of others in obtaining material wealth.
B. The scriptures speak about another kind of wisdom that is from God.
(See Vss. 13 & 17-18 and 1:5)
1. Wisdom from heaven is as follows:
a. Mothers let your children see in you the purity of God.
* “Pure” - the Greek word (hagnos) means “pure enough to approach the
gods.”
b. Mothers let your children see the love you have for God and your neighbor.
* “Peace loving” - the Greek word (eirenkos) means “right relationship with
man and man, and between man and God.”
c. Mothers teach your children to be both merciful and just.
* “Considerate” - the Greek word (epiekos) carries the idea of not demanding
justice when someone is wrong but tempering justice with mercy.”
* “Full of mercy and good fruit” - the Greek word (eleos) means “pity for a
man who is suffering unjustly.”
d. Mothers teach your children to be impartial by not showing favoritism
* “Impartial.” - the Greek word (adiakitos) means “without partiality.”
e. Mothers teach your children sincerity by being genuine.
* “Sincere” - the Greek word (anurokntos) means “without hypocrisy”. It carries the
idea of honesty; it never acts a part to gain its own end.

Taming of the Tongue - May 1, 2022

Taming of the Tongue
Text: James 3:1-12
Thesis: The Holy Spirit is the only one that can tame the tongue.
1. Everyone is in danger of stumbling with the tongue. (Vs. 2)
A. This is a universal danger.
See the sermon “The Power of the Spoken Word” 3-27-22
*“When words are many, sin is not far behind.”
Proverbs 10:9a
B. Do not join in on the local gossip.
1. Biblical principle when deciding who to talk to about the latest hot topic:
“You should only talk to those who are part of the problem or part of the
solution.”
2. Follow Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:15-17.
C. Avoid foolish talk.
*“Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or coarse joking.”
Ephesians 5:4
2. Never underestimate the power of the tongue because it is small.
A. The Tongue is powerful and is compared to the capability of the bit or rudder.
(Vss. 4 & 7)
1. So never say “It is just words”. One of the greatest lies is in the phrase “Sticks
and stones can break my bones but words will never harm me.”
3. The tongue has far reaching capabilities. (Vss. 5b & 6)
A. It was only a little spark that destroyed millions of acres of
precious timber.
1. A word spoken or text cannot be retrieved.
2. Taking your time to choose the correct words is time well spent.
4. The tongue has the capability of both blessing and cursing. (Vss. 9-12)
A. The tongue speaks out of the overflow of the heart.
*Jesus said, “You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the
mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”
Matthew 12:34
B. The tongue problem is a result of bad environment or a bad heart or a combination
of both.
C. Seek God’s help by consecrating your whole being to the Holy Spirit’s control.
1. No one can tame the tongue without the Holy Spirit’s power!
*“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your
whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus
Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23

There is a Time and Season for Every Aspect of Your Life - April 24, 2022
Sunday Apr 24, 2022

By Pastor Chuck Ryan
There is a “Time and Season” for Every Aspect of Your Life
Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-14
Thesis: Good News… God is with us in every activity and season of our lives!
1. “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.” (Vs. 1)
A. The Word of God recognizes there are events and circumstances that are
beyond our control.
*“A time to be born and a time to die.” (Vs. 2)
*“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding
fault, and it will be given to him.”
James 1:5
B. There is peace in trusting in God’s will.
The Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
2. Choose the steps of your life according to God’s will.
*“The length of our days is seventy years-- or eighty, if we have the strength. Yet their span is but trouble and
sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart
of wisdom.” Psalms 90:10-12
A. The three greatest choices we make in life!
1. Choose to make God first in your life.
*“If God is second in your life, he might as well be last.”
Unknown
*“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will
serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites, in
whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
Joshua 24:15
2. Choose your family.
*“If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his
immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an
unbeliever.”
1 Timothy 5:8
3. Choose to be a builder of the Kingdom of God.
*Jesus said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
Matthew 16:18
3. The Word of God reveals there are events and circumstances that are a result of the
choices we make, in the “Seasons” of our lives, as we are led by God.
*“A time to plant and a time to uproot.” (Vs 3)
A. Exactly 34 years ago to this very day, I preached my first sermon here at Homedale / Mountain
View Church of the Nazarene.
1. You have heard me say many times: “God always has our best
interest in mind.”
2. We came here to Pastor a Church (grow) and raise our family.
3. God always has another “Season” for our lives!
