The Specter Of Your Origin

 Text: 1 Samuel 16:1-13

 

1. The Specter of the Past
2. Your past does not prescribe your life’s possibilities.

                             After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him:  ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

                                                                                      - Acts 13:22

1. We must put our trust in the Lord to help us overcome the specter of our Past.

                             Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

                                                                                      - Psalm 9:10

1. Specter of the Present
2. Your present circumstances do not chart your life’s course.

                             David was given “the menial task assigned to the least important son or

                             servant of the household”                - Beacon Bible Commentary

                             …work that is far removed from anything we think of as ideal work. It is the utterly hard, menial, tiresome, and dirty work.

                             “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

                                                                                      - 1 Samuel 1:7

1. God doesn’t see what we see! 

                             You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.

                                                                                      - Psalm 139:1-3

1. There is real value in the average, ordinary, everyday things we do!

 

                            In some cases the way a person does a task makes that work sanctified and holy forever. It may be a very common everyday task, but after we have seen             it done, it becomes different. When the Lord does something through us, He always transforms it.

                             So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

The Specter of the Future

1.   Your future is feasible with faith!
2. The Lord will be in our midst to help us navigate through the future.

                             The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

                                                                                      - Deuteronomy 31:8

                             Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about

                             itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

                                                                                      - Matthew 6:34

                             But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands...
