Get on Board with God, “This very Day”!
Text: John 5:16-19
Thesis: God is presently at work building His magnificent Kingdom and He desires for us to joyfully join Him “this very day” (vs17)!
- Jesus in defending His actions, makes it very clear that “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working.” (vs17)
- Jesus pauses four times in this brief sentence to strongly emphasize a major understanding.
1st Jesus is saying, “God the Father” is His Father and he doesn’t take a vacation.
2nd Jesus is saying “and I”, meaning he is one with the Father. (see John 1:1)
“For this reason, they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.” (Vs 18)
3rd Jesus is saying “too”, meaning he and God are in lock step in carrying out God’s will. (see vs 19-23&30)
4th Jesus is saying, “am working”, meaning that he doesn’t take time off either in building the Kingdom of God.
- The question for the Christian is not “is God at work today”, but am I on board with what God is doing “this very day” (vs17)?
- Jesus teaches his disciples that they are to be like “little children.”
(Little children can not wait to go with their parents.)
- The religious leaders Jesus was addressing did not have “the concerns of God in mind” but selfish desires.
- Jesus speaks to his own Disciples about this issue.
“He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” (Matthew 16:21-23.)
- As Christian’s we are called to “have the concerns of God in mind”.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:1-2)
- The religious leaders with all their theological training could not recognize Jesus as “Immanuel-God with Us”. Their minds were not on the concerns of God but on self.
"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means "God with us". (Mathew 1:23)
III. Jesus’ Kingdom is being built one person at a time as they come to know Jesus as their personal savior.
- Mountain View’s mission statement is “To know Christ, share His love and make Him known to others” (See front of bulletin)
- People not knowing Jesus, is a major concern of God.
- As a Church Family we must continue to “Get on board with God.”
- As a Church we must stay in the Word through personal study, small group study and Sunday morning Worship. (Be involved in at least one worship service and one small group a week.)
- As a Church we must “be wise as serpents and gentle as doves” in reaching a lost world for Christ. (Implement and use the best sound and media technology available)
- As the Church we want to continue, through Christ to “Seek and save that which is lost.” (Introduce a friend or neighbor to Christ or invite them to Church so they can hear about Jesus.)
- As a Church we want to find an area to Serve in. (check opportunities in booklet 2A-3C)
